Face the groupies
One of the reasons people have flocked to social networking sites is the opportunity to join groups of like-minded individuals. It doesn’t matter which service you use, the ability to create or join groups will be present. Why is this?Well, here is an unfounded opinion:- Groups provide an overarching identity in addition to the personal that locates the individual in a group of like-minded...
Microsoft takes the cake
It appears that Microsoft have won the battle to secure a stake in Facebook beating out both Google and Yahoo!. As a result, Microsoft now have a $US240 million ($NZ324 million) dollar investment in the most talked about social networking site of the moment (the pressure to part with this much equity must have been enormous). Check out stuff.co.nz and c|net news.com for articles discussing this...
Nice things
The Station is busy changing its orbit so here’s some nice things out there in social space: An article at stuff.co.nz discussing the popularity of social networking. Naturally the current big three are mentioned. Creative Commons has opened shop in New Zealand. Russell Brown and Andrew Dubber have released a discussion document called ‘We’re All In This Together’ on...
Master of my domain
Ah, the Auckland Domain. 75 hectares of spacious fields, trees, museums and cricket pitches located in the heart of Auckland city; squeezed between the highfaluting suburbs of Parnell, Grafton, Khyber Pass and Newmarket. I spent a lot of time there as a kid and consequently have fond memories of ducks and statues and hillocks and jerseys for goal-posts … but I digress. The Social Space...
Cansei de Ser Sexy
Posting action has been a little quiet since last week’s epic post (well epic for a tumblelog at least) on territorial invasions of social networking space. There are many reasons for this lack of work, including a slow recovery from the aforementioned post but the main one is - layout. I have been mucking around with the Tumblr stylesheet to improve the appearance of the Social Space...
Territorial pissings
I delivered my final lecture of the year on Wednesday, which I thought went pretty well. Lots of good information was delivered, fun was had and there was lots of clapping (but not for me so much). At this lecture I made a suggestion to the 250 or so students present (and one that I thought was pretty good at first) that they could ask me questions through any of my profiles on Facebook, Bebo,...

Claim that identity
ClaimID.com is a nice place to document and organise links to your various profiles out there in online social space. Another nice thing about this service is that it’s connected to the OpenID Web authentication service. OpenID is all about rationalising authentication details required to manage your profiles on MySpace, Facebook and so on, and all in one location. Once you have registered...
The social bookmarking wars
I recommend this article at Read/WriteWeb by Alex Iskold on the top-performing social bookmarking sites. The article discusses the metrics used to estimate the most popular book marking service and provides data on the top six sites (see following table). The clear winner (unsurprisingly) was del.icio.us - the pioneer of the social bookmarking phenomenon. Interestingly enough, the proportional...
