The Unsolicited Electronic Messages Act 2007

On September 5th 2007 the The Unsolicited Electronic Messages Act will take effect in New Zealand. This act is designed to curb the amount of spam (defined as “unsolicited commercial electronic messages”) that inflicts New Zealand citizens’ email boxes everyday.

As a consequence, legitimate email subscription services based in New Zealand (defined as those responsible for “messages sent to, from or within New Zealand”) are sending out emails requiring re-confirmation of all existing subscriptions.

I’ve had two already that require action by September 4th. If you don’t re-opt-in (if that is a real word) by the this date, the service stops.

I think everyone can appreciate any efforts to stop spam wasting bandwidth, storage and time but this consequence is little annoying.
