The social bookmarking wars

I recommend this article at Read/WriteWeb by Alex Iskold on the top-performing social bookmarking sites. The article discusses the metrics used to estimate the most popular book marking service and provides data on the top six sites (see following table).

The clear winner (unsurprisingly) was del.icio.us - the pioneer of the social bookmarking phenomenon. Interestingly enough, the proportional difference in usage between the first and second place holders looks similar to the difference between MySpace activity and other social networking sites.

I actually prefer Ma.gnolia (in second place) for bookmarking. The service is more elegant and pleasurable to use compared with del.icio.us. In fact, I moved from del.icio.us to Ma.gnolia because I could not work out how to delete all my bookmarks without either removing them one-by-one or removing the entire account and neither of these options was satisfactory.

Having said that, I have not spent much time at Ma.gnolia recently as I spend more time elsewhere travelling around online social space. Therefore, just how essential are social bookmarking sites?
